Fall vs winter wedding shows

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Last week’s wedding show at the Caboto Club went very well for me. I had not done the fall show the last couple years, opting to just do the bigger show in January, but I guess I’ve found that bigger isn’t always better.

The first wedding show I ever did was actually the fall show. It’s been a while, but I don’t remember getting any bookings from it. Looking back, what could I have expected? I was new, had very little material to demo, and didn’t have the confidence and polish that I have today. My brochures and business cards are nicer, I have a a beautiful banner, I have much more material to demo, and my booth looks much better. Consequently, I had numerous engaging conversations with potential clients.

Go figure.

The winter show in January is much bigger, there’s no question about that, but one thing you can never predict is the weather.

Earlier this year in January, the Wedding Extravaganza got off to a roaring start on day 1, but overnight and into the morning of day 2, Windsor was tagged with a wicked snow storm. It got cold and nasty and the roads were very icy. Day 2 was a bomb. I don’t think we had even half the people we had from day 1. As a vendor, it’s tough paying $700+ for two days of booth space but really only getting 1.

Right now, I’m not sure what to do about the upcoming January ‘09 show. I’m tempted to wait until the week of the event and see what the weather report says. Of course, the selection of good booths could be very limited by then, or even entirely sold out. I will have to think about it over the next week or so.

The Fall Wedding Event

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Windsor’s Caboto Club will soon be hosting The Fall Wedding Event.

This is an opportunity to “find everything for your wedding under one roof. From caterers to entertainment, hundreds of vendors will help keep your wedding planning stress-free.”

The Delirium Media booth number is 43s, which will be located on the outside perimeter of the back wall.

The Fall Wedding Event will take place on September 24th and 25th, between the hours of 5:30PM and 9:00PM both nights.

Hope to see you there!

Hats off to Lids!

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

It’s not like me to go a week without a new post, but I have been one busy bee lately.

First off, I shot four weddings this month. That’s four weddings that all need to be edited pronto so I can get them back to my clients ASAP.

I also moved, as in, a change of residential address. Not exactly something you do in one afternoon.

And I’ve been running around the city in search of the right shirts and hats to be deemed “Delirium Media-worthy.” See, I’m going to have some shirts and hats made up that have the Delirium Media logo on them, so it’s important I get the good stuff. You’d be surprised how hard it is to find a plain white, fitted hat in this city. A shout out to “Lids” at the Devonshire Mall for coming through in the clutch for me.

Silver Stitch has these great lightweight shirts that absorb moisture and keep you cool when you are sweating. This is perfect for shooting those July and August weddings when the temperature can hit north of 90 degrees. The shirts are also made out of recycled water bottles, so I’m doing my part to be green as well. Silver Stitch will also be doing all my embroidery.

I’ve always thought branding was so important, and I think a lot of people underestimate the power of a unique name and memorable logo. In video production, no matter how great your work is, unless a lot of people see it, you will struggle to reap the rewards of your labour. It’s the same with a company name and logo, you need to get your message out to the world.

Wearing apparel like shirts and hats is one great way to do that.

Hossa lands in Hockeytown

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The Detroit Red Wings have signed unrestricted free agent forward Marian Hossa to a one-year deal worth $7.45 million.

I don’t think anyone saw this coming. Speculation hinted that Hossa was heading to Edmonton, Montreal, or remaining with Pittsburgh.

Personally, I was just thrilled that the Wings were able to sign Brad Stuart, as many insiders thought he would bolt for bigger bucks. But obviously he felt that remaining with a winning team was more important.

Hossa also could have made more money elsewhere, but chose to sign with the team that defeated his Penguins in the recent Stanley Cup final.

It’s almost embarrassing to have so much talent on one team, especially in the new salary cap era of the NHL. With these two signings, the Red Wings have to be the early Stanley Cup favourite for the 2008-09 season.

The best just got better.

Showcase of Kings

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Last night’s filming of the Windsor Elvis-Fest went very smooth. In case you weren’t there, this video gives you a taste of what you missed. To see more, order your copy of the entire performance today by calling our office at 519-739-3700. You can also still order the 2006 Elvis-Fest DVD.

Windsor the next filmmaking hotbed?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Last Saturday, there was an article in the Windsor Star that touched on the growing filmmaking community in Windsor. In case you missed it, you can read the article by clicking here.

It’s great to see people realizing that you don’t need to be in Toronto to make films. Hopefully this is something that continues to gather steam.

This article was of particular interest to me as I would like to make films as well. If you would like to be involved in one of my upcoming films, as cast or crew, or if you think you have a dynamite script, please contact my office at 519-739-3700.

The King is back!

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It looks like we will indeed be filming the 2008 Windsor Elvis-Fest.

In 2006, Windsor held its first annual Windsor Elvis-Fest, and Delirium Media was chosen to film the event and produce a souvenir DVD. We filmed the entire three-day event and edited the footage down into a 90-minute highlight video. It was very well received, many claiming it to be the best Elvis-Fest video they had ever seen.

In 2007, it came right down to the wire, but due to legal restrictions with EPE (Elvis Presley Enterprises), it became apparent that we would not be able to film enough footage to produce a worthwhile video. It was never filmed.

But this year, we are very excited to be part of the festival once again. The video will be a little different the 2006 version. Rather than package highlights from the weekend, this year’s video will contain only the “Showcase of Kings” (Friday night’s show at the Chrysler Theatre). There are still restrictions on what we can film, so we are limited to Friday’s show, however, on the good side, you will see every song in its entirety, as opposed to 30-60 second clips.

You will be able to order your 2008 Elvis-Fest DVD starting Friday night at the Chrysler Theatre. After that, you may call the Delirium Media office at 519-739-3700. Don’t forget, we still have the 2006 Windsor Elvis-Fest DVD available as well.

Betting on Caesars

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

It appears all the renovations are complete at the Caesars Windsor Casino.

Formally known as Casino Windsor, Caesars Windsor allowed the press inside for a sneak peek on Thursday, and so far the reviews have been very positive. The public will get a chance to see the new and improved casino next Thursday, June 19th.

One of the highlights is “The Colosseum,” a 5,000 seat auditorium. Some pretty impressive performers will be headlining there this summer, including one of my favourite comedians, Chris Rock (July 16th).

If you have too much money and don’t know what to do with it, maybe this will solve your problem. Gamblers will be able to make a maximum bet of $50K on certain games.

Yikes!

Hopefully this new and improved casino is a boost to Windsor’s economy and spirit, as the city could certainly use it.
